On December 31, 2011 we bid a closing farewell to the spot on Lonsdale Avenue that housed all the flavours of Coral Court Szechuan Cuisine for over 60 years. With so many loyal customers and ginger-beef-fanatics unwilling to give up the flavourful food they had grown accustomed to, we could not let this legacy end. Thus we went in search of a new location suitable for housing such enormous flavours. Our search ended only a short one-block distance away at 137 E 2nd Street, and with the grand re-opening three months later in March 2012, the distinct flavours brought by Coral Court's head chef of over 15 years was returned.
A hidden gem in the lower lonsdale area, Coral Court is a short two block walk from the scenic Lonsdale Quay, right off of the busy Lonsdale Avenue. This family-style restaurant brings you bursting aromatic dishes served in a cozy dining area. Bring family and friends to come taste a few of our most well-known dishes: Hot Chicken on Top of Fried Spinach, Dai Ching Chicken, or Ma Po Tofu and experience the flavours that will keep you coming back for more!
What is Szechuan Cuisine and how is it different from "Chinese Food"?
Szechuan cuisine is a style of Chinese cuisine from the Sichuan (四川) province of Southwestern China. Famed for its bold flavours, particularly the pungency and spiciness resulting from liberal use of garlic and chili peppers, szechuan cuisine has a reputation for being extremely hot and spicy in taste. However, only a small portion of szechuan dishes are actually very spicy while the rest are flavoured with unique combinations of szechuan peppercorn (花椒), chili peppers, garlic, peanuts, sesame, and ginger.
